Digital Art Education

Finally, we have gotten down to penning a few words of advice and the start of what will hopefully be a useful continuing education repository for fellow digital artist looking to start a career in the Entertainment industry through to useful advice/scenarios of working on the job as a professional games artist.

In addition, we will have guest editorials from various colleagues, and artist from the whole spectrum of the Entertainment Industry, to better educate ourselves in this ever blurring world of digital media.

Please feel free to add any useful feedback, or first hand experiences at your recent educational experiences or your journey as artist as a shared community.

HAha.

Well Okay Ill give this a Go then.

Well, where Do I start. I suppose I could start by saying life has troubled me and Ive faced alot of deperssion. But I hope to better myself. 3 Days ago I started anti-depression pills. They wont take into affect by next week.

I hope with enough positive energy instead of always feeling negative I can begin to learn and conqour some of my artistic potential.

I am of course, self taught. I feel my work is very poor and often enough very sloppy and fast.

Well my first expirence in the industry. Well I moved to a different city I was 22, And I was really depressed at the time, having not be able to afford a place anymore I had lived on the street. Although I continued my efforts and painted alot. I would goto a art and paint alot. It wasnt till spring came around many months i struggled on the street. I was told of a small video game company in this small city.

So I went in there showed them my small portfolio I kept with me, And I was hired that day. So for the next six month I was a concept artist and game deisgner. I learned some very crucial fundementals of how everything worked. But with a small team being funded by telefilm Canada. The game looked bleak and not exciting. If anything confusing. A title Called "Space Traders". My time there, I tried my best to deliver my work usually spending the night in the office working away, even sometime exhusted and slept on the floor. The best part was that I enjoyed making weapon flashs. That was really fun. And as some game testers tried out the new gun flashs and sound effects. They were turned on by it. But later it was replaced by someone. I remember these game testers who would come in and sit beside me telling me that this game is fun in deathmatchs. And I couldnt agree more. My demands were of course high. but they couldnt do anything about it. I wanted better guns, armoured soldiers. you know. But the game direction wasnt there, it was someplace else stalling the real excitement.

Well. I still continue to work on a video game of my own. But having a programmer who is not very motivated towards it. things have somewhat slowed down. So, I took something that i think I can have some potential with. Penguin Wars. For some reason everyone like penguin games and I want to express it in a snowball fps game, all 3D and online multiplayer. (Its all in my blog)

I know my skill is probably not even ameture at its best. But im sure with some learning expirence and tremendouse understanding and effort I can better myself in this artistic competitive world.

Well, I have been more focusing on my own life infact. Improving it in alot of ways. Trying to establish a real career as a Welder or a pipefitter for the oil and gas industry.

But even then I let my creativity get a best of me. One day my welder didnt give a shit and ask me to go ahead and weld so I was taking out some rebar and then junk pieces and was crafting myself a robot standing 3ft tall. Everyone liked it within 4 hours It was looking pretty sweet. Really easy to take a zipcut cut out the pieces I wanted started with the basics fabricating it together, more less tacking pieces. Even used nuts and bolts for moving limbs. Everyone in the shop wanted to look at this transformer they called it.

But for the future of myself. As there are not many game companies in the area- My future looks somewhat bleak as this game artist developer I want to be. But hey' It dosnt end there. I tell myself. I got many years ahead of me. To focus and deliver my own promises.

Thats all I really have to say at this point. Thanks for listening.

Hi Koshime. I just stumbled upon your blog after finding your site on ImagineFx. I too am offering great tutorials and resources on my my own little art blog- ashleywalters.blogspot.com/.

I am just now getting serious about digital painting. I've only been doing it for about a year and a half but with solid traditional art training and an art degree I have great foundational knowledge that I see even pros missing. I am determined- waking up first thing in the morning and staying up late- and I know with a little more work I can be in the industry- www.ashleywalters.net/.

Right now I'm building my portfolio and tapping into resources like ImagineFx to showcase my work. I'm making a switch to art more geared towards the gaming industry but I still have a ways to go. So thanks very much for offering resources like this to people like me. It's a great way for me to know wich direction to take. Cheers!
